Kumbham Handicrafts Village in Nilambur

The Kumbharan Village – situated in the small village of Aruvacode, which lies in the vicinity of Nilambur of Malappuram district of the state of Kerala, has got its name from the resident people who belong to the Kumbharan community.

Kumbham meaning “clay pots” – The people of the Kumbham community are best known for their skills in producing traditional hand-made crafts, especially pottery, and other utensils and handicrafts which are mainly made out of clay.

The traditional handicrafts had lost their identity as the emergence of other cheap industrial substitutes and plastic products had taken over them.

Kumbham Handicraft Project

KB Jinan, a designer-cum-activist from Thrissur discovered the talent and skills of the Kumbham Village in 1992. He helped revive and promote the crafts of the Kumbham community and initiated the Kumbham Handicraft Project in 1993, thereby enabling the Kumbham community make a niche for their skills.

The Kumbham Handicraft project is an eco-friendly attempt to regain the lost value of the handicrafts.

The Kumbham Handicraft Project under the leadership of Jinan, has expanded into a team of 80 potters. These potters have re-invented their skills by integrating experimentation and latest designs into their traditional know-how.

From Home to Office to Resorts

The residents of the Kumbham Handicrafts Village have elaborated their products ranging from kitchenware to garden furniture, from office stationery to décor accessories like tiles and murals. Their new experiment with terracotta has resulted in about 500 unique designs in their kit.

The Kumbham murals and other products are found adding to the beauty of the eco-tourism resorts and corporate houses.
